A leaf can be drawn to perfection and the whole effect lost in three hours of installation. Silence in a room, lightness in opening and an even gap around the door are all settled off the drawing — in the mass of the leaf, the choice of hardware and the way the frame is set.
Where silence comes from
Sound behaves like water. It finds every gap and passes through it, even if the rest of the partition is heavy and tight. Two things therefore decide a door's acoustics at once, never one: the mass of the leaf i the tightness of its perimeter.
Mass works most simply — the heavier the leaf, the harder it is to set vibrating. A leaf with a solid core quiets markedly more than the same leaf with a honeycomb core. It is the only parameter that can be planned at the drawing stage, and the first we ask about when a client says “bedroom next to the living room”.
Tightness is harder, because its enemy is millimetres. The rebate gives natural sealing on three sides and a seal hidden in the profile. The rebateless construction closes on a perimeter seal in the frame. In both cases the construction of the leaf itself remains — and it is that, not a threshold, which is the real instrument by which we improve acoustics.
The greatest acoustic loss in a typical interior door is not the leaf. It is the gap beneath it — but a threshold is not the only way to close it.
Most is given by the construction of the leaf — a timber frame with a joiner's core quiets vibration markedly better than a light honeycomb construction, and damping material can be introduced between the ribs, improving acoustics without touching the threshold. Where conditions allow, we add a drop-down threshold seal, concealed in the lower edge of the leaf and closing to the floor automatically as the door shuts. In many interiors — especially those with mechanical ventilation and heat recovery — closing the gap entirely is impossible, since the room must be assured a flow of air. In such cases silence is built chiefly from the side of the leaf. We never use fixed thresholds — they divide the floor and diminish the comfort of passage.

A quiet door can be recognised by hand, before anyone measures anything with an instrument. A closed leaf pressed at the corner should neither give nor “breathe”. If it moves, the seal is not working around the whole perimeter, and the acoustics are merely a claim.

The hardware carries all the mass
A leaf that is solid, tall and veneered can weigh tens of kilograms. All that weight hangs on two or three points. The choice of hinge is therefore no finishing detail — it is a structural decision, taken together with the decision on the core.
Visible and concealed hinges
A visible pin hinge is simpler to adjust and carries more. A concealed hinge disappears entirely with the leaf shut and allows a clean plane — indispensable wherever a door is to disappear into a wall. It has less reserve of capacity, so a heavy leaf takes three rather than two, and a taller door four or more.
Every concealed hinge adjusts in three axes. This is not a luxury but the condition of keeping an even gap over years: a house moves, plaster dries, floors settle. A door that cannot be adjusted begins to catch after two seasons.
Latches, handles, closers
A magnetic latch closes without a metallic click — the difference is audible especially at night, in a hallway beside bedrooms. The handle is the one part of a door you touch every day, so its weight and finish say more about the whole than the drawing of the face. Concealed doors more often use solutions without a handle — opened by push, or by an edge pull.
Installation decides everything
The most frequent complaints about doors do not concern leaves. They concern what became of the frame after it left the workshop.
The order of the works is the first thing to settle. A concealed frame enters the wet stage of building — it is fitted before plastering, because the plaster finishes at its edge. Rebateless and rebated frames come at the end, after the floor and after painting. Mistaking that order means either cutting back plaster or a visible joint around the door.
Humidity is the second. Timber and veneer answer to moisture in the air — a leaf brought into a room with a freshly poured screed takes up water unevenly and can bow. Doors are brought into an interior that is dry and warmed through, not onto a building site.
Plumb and plane are the third. A frame set out of plumb gives a leaf that opens or closes by itself. No adjustment of a hinge will remedy it — it must be taken out and set again.
This is why we measure ourselves, on site, and not from a plan sent by email. The drawing shows the opening the architect designed. The measurement shows the opening the builders made.
From the workshop
The opening for a concealed door must be larger than for an ordinary one — the aluminium frame has a thickness of its own and needs room for adjustment. If the masonry already stands finished to a standard dimension, choosing a concealed frame means cutting. That one conversation, held a month earlier, saves a week's work.
What to settle before ordering
Four questions that will be asked in any case — better answered in good time:
- Where silence is needed. A bedroom, a study and a bathroom ask different things of a door than a dressing room or a pantry. A solid core and a drop-down seal are used where they matter.
- Which frame system. It is a decision about the order of the works on site, not only about appearance — and the earliest of them all.
- What height of leaf. Over-height leaves call for a different arrangement of hinges and a different construction of the frame.
- What happens with the floor. The thickness of the build-up, the threshold between rooms, and whether the floor runs under the door or finishes at it.
Answers to these four questions close off ninety per cent of the surprises at installation. The rest is craft.
